How to Use Jamf's Self-Service Application

With the installation of Jamf Pro on all our supported machines, the distribution and implementation of supported software has been made easier than ever for both IT-Client Services and our users. One of the most useful facets of Jamf Pro is Self Service, which acts as a hub from which supported software can be found and downloaded. In this guide we will outline how to find and operate this program.

  1. First locate Self Service.  It is in the Applications folder and should be in the Dock. You can also search for it in Spotlight.

Spotlight can be found in the right hand side of the menu bar

2. Once Spotlight opens, type Self Service and launch the program once it appears. Note: Icons may vary

Enter Self Service in the search field

 3. If “No Self Service Items” is displayed, click the house icon at the center top portion of the window. If items are still unavailable, contact a Jamf Pro administrator.

If no items are available click the House icon at the top center of the window

 4. A category list is available in the left hand column. There is also a search field in the upper left corner if you are looking for a specific application.

Categories appear on the left. A search bar is in the top left corner. Install applications via the Install button

5. The wording on the buttons is somewhat customizable, but here are four common ones:

  • Install - The policy has never been used on the computer.

  • Re-install - The policy has at some point been used on the computer. It says nothing about the current state, just that it has been used before.

  • Open - The app is part of Mac Apps (Jamf Pro's version of App Store) and is currently installed. This status may not update if the app is later deleted manually, and selecting Open will re-install the app at that time.

  • Add Printer - The policy will install printer drivers and map a printer.
