Multi-Factor Authentication (Duo)

Multi-Factor Authentication (Duo)

Most UNI services require Duo, a multi-factor authentication system that protects your account. Using Duo helps ensure your account is only accessed by you.

Enrolling

When you are required to use Duo with your UNI account, the enrollment prompt will appear automatically upon log on:

  1. Install the Duo Mobile app on your cell phone through the app store (Google Play or Apple Store). Note: receiving a phone call or text messages is not available as an authentication method due to federal regulations.

    1. If you do not have a compatible smartphone, a Duo token can be used instead.

    2. The Duo Mobile app is recommended to be enrolled and activated even if you set up hardware-based authentications, like TouchID, FaceID, Windows Hello, etc. If you only register your computer(s), but do not have the Duo Mobile App registered on your phone, you will only be able to log onto UNI's web resources via your personal computer(s). This means without the Duo App enrolled and activated, you would not be able to log on to web resources if your computer was to be unavailable, nor would you be able to log on to web resources in computer labs, on classroom computers, or on friend/family computers. As such, IT highly recommends you install the Duo Mobile app and activate it to ensure continued access to your account from any computer. That said, if your device supports TouchID, FaceID, Windows Hello, and other "passwordless" solutions and Duo offers you the option to use them, those provide a very secure and convenient method to use for multi-factor authentication.

  2. Visit a UNI service that uses Duo other than email, Blackboard (eLearning) or UNI Works (Workday) are good choices.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to enroll.

Need help?

If you have problems enrolling, contact the IT Service Desk with a description of your problem for additional assistance.

Using Duo after enrollment

After your account is enrolled with a Duo device, you'll need to have that device handy when signing in to services that use Duo. If you don't have access to your Duo device, you can contact the IT Service Desk for a temporary bypass code or for assistance in enrolling a new or different device.

Once your device receives a Duo push you initiated, you will need to choose the "Approve" option to proceed.

Adding an additional Duo device

Do you have multiple phones or devices you could use with Duo? To add an additional Duo device to your account, visit Duo's instructions:

Traveling Abroad

The Duo mobile app can generate passcodes for use with Duo authentication. The phone needs no network connection of any kind for this. Alternatively, a Duo token could be purchased from the UNI Bookstore. That device also generates passcodes and needs no network connectivity to function.

Problems receiving a Duo push notification?

If you have chosen the "Send Me a Push" option and your device isn't appearing with the prompt, open the Duo app. This should initiate the notification.

Ensure your device's clock is accurate, set to synchronize automatically, and that your device is configured for the correct time zone.

Duo also has an extensive article on troubleshooting Duo Push notifications on Android devices and another on troubleshooting push notifications on iOS devices.
