Saving Files within Purple Desktop

Saving Files within Purple Desktop

When using the Purple desktop it's best to imagine you are sitting in a computer lab on campus.  Any files you create and save to those computers will be lost when you log out.  In order to retain your files they must be moved elsewhere.  This document goes over a few options for moving\saving files to avoid data loss.

The following options are dependent on a number of variables.  You will need to select the one that best fits your needs.

Option 1. (Generic Cloud System)

  • Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) within the desktop and log into whatever cloud system contains the file(s) you need.

    • Examples of could systems include Email, Google Drive, eLearning, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc

  • Download the file onto the Purple desktop.

    • The browsers are likely to automatically store the files in the Downloads folder.  If it asks you where to save the file we suggest selecting the Desktop.

  • Once done reverse your process and upload the files to whichever cloud system they came from.

Option 2. (Google Drive)

  • Click on the start button and type Google Drive selecting the app once it appears.

  • Log into Drive.  Once complete you will have a G drive that will appear within Explorer.

  • You can simply drag and drop files to and from the G drive as needed now.

  • If the files are large please give the Google Drive app a few minutes to upload the files once you drop them into the G drive.

    • You can validate the file has been uploaded by logging into Drive in a web browser.

Option 3. (Transfer files locally)

  • This option is only recommended for those with experience navigating Windows file systems along with their person computer if it's running an OS other than Windows
