Keychain Password Repair

If you are getting a keychain password prompt on your computer, this can be resolved in one of three ways.

  1. If you recently changed your CatID, the keychain is likely asking you for your previous password. If you remember your password, you can update your keychain password without losing any of the saved data by following the steps in this Apple article:

    1. macOS 15 or newer

    2. macOS 14 or older

  2. If you remember your previous password, you can also use Terminal. Open a terminal session and type in "security set-keychain-password" (without quotes). It will then prompt for Old PW and then New PW twice.

  3. If you do not know your previous password, you will need to delete your keychain manually.

    1. From the Go menu, hold down the Option key and select Library

    2. Find the folder "Keychains"

    3. Delete it

    4. Reboot the computer

Note: Deleting your keychain will delete all saved passwords on your computer.
