How to Enroll in Duo Multi-Factor Authentication
Important
It is recommended to use a computer to start the Duo enrollment process and then use your cell phone when prompted for enrollment.
Before You Begin
Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) helps protect your UNI account, email, financial aid information, and academic records.
UNI’s standard and recommended setup is Duo Mobile on your personal smartphone.
Important:
Use your own smartphone during setup.
Do not use a parent or family member’s phone, tablet, or computer.
Do not rely only on Touch ID, Windows Hello, or another device-based login method. (These methods may be added after you arrive at UNI, but for Orientation, using your smartphone with the Duo app is the best option.)
Bring the same smartphone you use during setup with you to Orientation and campus activities.
If Duo is set up on a device you do not bring with you, you may not be able to log in later without assistance from UNI IT staff.
The enrollment process usually takes about 5 minutes.
Step 1
Sign in as normal to the CatID login page with your CatID username and password.
Step 2
Once successfully logged in, you'll see the start setup screen for Duo MFA. Click Start setup.
Step 3
You will be asked for the type of device you're going to use. Mobile phone is the recommended and most convenient option with the Duo Mobile Security application for both iOS and Android smartphones. Select Mobile phone and click the Continue button. If you do not have a smart phone or cannot add the Duo Mobile Security app to your smartphone for some reason, a Duo hardware token can be purchased.
Step 4
Enter your ten digit phone number, area code first, in the box provided. You'll notice a check box appear below asking if you entered it correctly (1). If it looks correct, check the box indicating that it is (2). Finally, click the Continue button (3).
Step 5
Choose the type of phone you are enrolling and click Continue. (For purposes of this article, we're enrolling an iPhone)
Step 6
You will be asked to verify that you have the Duo Mobile app installed. Click I have Duo Mobile installed to be taken to the next screen. In the following steps we'll actually install the app on our smartphone.
Problems installing the app?
If you're having issues installing Duo and have your UNI account added to your phone, remove the UNI account, install Duo, and then add it back in. UNI accounts aren't able to install apps which could interfere with installing apps on your phone.
For general help enrolling, visit Duo's enrollment guide.
Step 7
The enrollment process now needs you to download the Duo Mobile app for your smartphone. On your smartphone, navigate to the appropriate app store and search for Duo Mobile. Once you've found it, tap Get if you've never installed it before or tap the cloud download arrow if you've had the app previously on this or another iOS device. See Duo's article for assistance installing Duo on Android.
With the app downloaded, launch it from your device's home screen. Tap the Continue button. On the next screen, choose Use QR code.
You'll see the camera screen in the app next and perhaps be asked to grant the app access to your camera. Grant Duo Mobile camera permissions.
Hold the camera open towards your computer screen and scan the QR code that appears. The Duo Mobile app will automatically set up the app for use with your UNI account.
When it's done, you'll be asked to name the account. Click Next to move to the screen where you can enter the name of the account in Duo. IT recommends you name it University of Northern Iowa to help remember what it is used for.
Step 8
You have now successfully linked your account to your Duo Mobile app. You'll be asked if you want to practice the push notification process. You can choose to do so or skip.
Step 9
Back on your computer, you will now see a green check mark appear in the middle of the QR code meaning you have successfully completed the linking of your account to the mobile app. Click Continue.
Step 10
The final step will push a notification from Duo MFA on your computer to your Duo mobile app to complete the login process. Click Send Me a Push. Note: receiving a phone call or text messages is not available as an authentication method due to security and financial concerns. The Duo Mobile app is the recommended and most secure method.
You'll see the computer screen change to notify you it sent a push notification and it's waiting your response in the Duo Mobile app.
Back on your smartphone, look for the Duo Mobile prompt, or if you didn't grant the application the rights to send you notifications, you'll have to open the app and check for the notification there. Tap the green check mark to choose Approve.
Finally, back on your computer, you should see the notification telling you that you've completed the enrollment process for Duo MFA.
You are now enrolled and your UNI account protected using MFA!
What Happens Next?
Once enrolled, you will use the Duo Mobile App to approve login requests when accessing UNI systems and services.
