Pre-Assigned Zoom Breakout Rooms

Pre-Assigned Zoom Breakout Rooms

IT-Educational Technology & Media Services discourages use of the prescheduling of Zoom breakout rooms feature as it has proven to be unreliable. We've had a number of reports from users in the past that have experienced problems with it not working after going to the work of using the prescheduling option.

The recommended alternative is to make a list of numbered rooms using a preferred method. This could be a Google Doc to which you place a link in your Bb Learn course or could be done directly in Blackboard as well, for example by using a "Blank Page". This is accessed via "Build Content", the same location as adding an Item, a File, or a Content Folder. In the Blank Page's properties, you'll be able to use the content editor to type and format the details for the groups.

You just need to make students/attendees aware of which numbered group they are in.

Then in Zoom, for each session, when you're ready to move students/attendees into the breakout rooms, you'll just need to click on "Breakout Rooms" at the bottom of the Zoom window and in the resulting dialogue box, set the number of rooms you need, change the dot selected to "Let participants choose room", and click "Create".

On the next screen, you will then click "Open All Rooms".
