Connecting to a Macintosh using RealNVC Viewer

RealVNC Viewer is an application which allows you to remotely connect to an on-campus Macintosh computer.

Step-by-step guide

1.  If you have never used remote desktop before, please enter a Service Hub request to verify that you have the correct permissions on your UNI workstation to do so. 

2. Install and configure Cisco AnyConnect

3. Download and install RealNVC Viewer

4. Launch RealVNC Viewer

5. From the File menu, select "New connection..."

   Open

   

6. Enter in the full computer name (i.e. it-username.ad.uni.edu) of the Mac you want to connect to as the VNC Server. If you have a white asset label on your computer, your computer name can be found there.
   

   
   If you do not have a white UNI label on your computer then you can find the name in the Sharing settings.

   1. Open System Preferences

   2. Select the Sharing pane

   3. Enter the Computer Name displayed as the VNC Server, followed by ".ad.uni.edu". In the image shown, the name entered into VNC Server would be "it-example.ad.uni.edu"
      

7. (optional) Enter a more memorable name

8. Click the "OK" button

9. Double-click the newly created connection

10. Click "Continue" when you see the security warning
    

11. Enter your CatID and Password. This is the same ID and password you would normally use to log-in to your on-campus computer.

12. If you are asked, grant VNC Viewer access to your computer by clicking "Give access"
    

    1. Select "Open System Preferences"
       

    2. Unlock the Security & Privacy pane, and check the box next to "VNC Viewer"
