Recover Access to Your UNI Account with Duo (using a bypass code)

Recover Access to Your UNI Account with Duo (using a bypass code)

Important

It is recommended to use your phone for this, so it will be set up as your second factor device.

When Should I Use This Guide?

Use this guide if:

  • You replaced or reset your phone

  • You no longer have access to the device originally used for Duo

  • Duo was set up on a device you do not currently have with you

  • You are unable to approve a Duo login request

A bypass code provides temporary access so you can reconnect Duo to your current smartphone.

Don’t worry. This issue is common and can usually be resolved in just a few minutes.

Common Reasons This Happens

  • You got a new phone

  • Your old phone was lost, replaced, or reset

  • Duo was originally set up on a parent or family member’s phone

  • You used Touch ID, Windows Hello, or another device-specific login method on a device you no longer have access to

Step 1

Please have your CatID username and your current smartphone available before beginning this process.

Reach out to the UNI IT Service Desk and ask for a bypass code for your account. This can be done by:

  • Calling: 319-273-5555

  • Opening a service hub ticket: servicehub.uni.edu

Step 2

Once you have a bypass code, please log in, a recommended site would be the MyUNIverse portal at: myuniverse.uni.edu

Your bypass code is temporary. Before it expires, you must reconnect Duo to the smartphone you plan to use moving forward. This guide will help you with that process.

Step 3

Once you successfully enter your CatID (username) and password you should see a message similar to this:

Please click on Other options

Step 4

At this point you will see something like what is shown below.

Your bypass code is temporary. Before it expires, you must reconnect Duo to the smartphone you plan to use moving forward. Continue following this guide to get your smart phone properly enrolled.

While you can enter the bypass code and continue on, your bypass code is only good for 12 hours. In that 12 hours you need to:

  1. Find your original device

  2. Add a new device by clicking on Manage devices as shown above. Selecting Manage devices helps you to reconnect Duo to your current smartphone.

The steps from here on out help you continue to add your new device.

Step 5

To add the new device it must verify who you are, it will present you the same page you see above. Please at this time click on Bypass code and enter the code provided to you by the UNI IT Service desk.

Step 6

You will be asked for the type of device you're going to use. Mobile phone is the recommended and most convenient option with the Duo Mobile Security application for both iOS and Android smartphones. Select Mobile phone and click the Continue button.

Step 7

Enter your ten digit phone number, area code first, in the box provided. You'll notice a check box appear below asking if you entered it correctly (1). If it looks correct, check the box indicating that it is (2). Finally, click the Continue button (3).

Step 8

Choose the type of phone you are enrolling and click Continue. (For purposes of this article, we're enrolling an iPhone)

Step 9

You will be asked to verify that you have the Duo Mobile app installed. Click I have Duo Mobile installed to be taken to the next screen. In the following steps we'll actually install the app on our smartphone.

Problems installing the app?

If your phone blocks installation of the Duo Mobile app, temporarily remove any existing UNI account connection from your phone, install Duo Mobile, and then reconnect your UNI account

For general help enrolling, visit Duo's enrollment guide.

Step 10

The enrollment process now needs you to download the Duo Mobile app for your smartphone. On your smartphone, navigate to the appropriate app store and search for Duo Mobile. Once you've found it, tap Get if you've never installed it before or tap the cloud download arrow if you've had the app previously on this or another iOS device. See Duo's article for assistance installing Duo on Android.

With the app downloaded, launch it from your device's home screen. Tap the Continue button. On the next screen, choose Use QR code.

You'll see the camera screen in the app next and perhaps be asked to grant the app access to your camera. Grant Duo Mobile camera permissions.

Hold the camera open towards your computer screen and scan the QR code that appears. The Duo Mobile app will automatically set up the app for use with your UNI account.

When it's done, you'll be asked to name the account. Click Next to move to the screen where you can enter the name of the account in Duo. IT recommends you name it University of Northern Iowa to help remember what it is used for.

Step 11

You have now successfully linked your account to your Duo Mobile app. You'll be asked if you want to practice the push notification process. You can choose to do so or skip.

Step 12

Back on your computer, you will now see a green check mark appear in the middle of the QR code meaning you have successfully completed the linking of your account to the mobile app. Click Continue.

Step 13

The final step will push a notification from Duo MFA on your computer to your Duo mobile app to complete the login process. Click Send Me a PushNote: receiving a phone call or text messages is not available as an authentication method due to security and financial concerns. The Duo Mobile app is the recommended and most secure method.

You'll see the computer screen change to notify you it sent a push notification and it's waiting your response in the Duo Mobile app.

Back on your smartphone, look for the Duo Mobile prompt, or if you didn't grant the application the rights to send you notifications, you'll have to open the app and check for the notification there. Tap the green check mark to choose Approve.

Finally, back on your computer, you should see the notification telling you that you've completed the enrollment process for Duo MFA.

You are now enrolled and your UNI account protected using MFA!

You’re All Set!

Your UNI account is now connected to your current smartphone using Duo Mobile.

Recommended Next Steps

  • Enable Duo Restore in the Duo Mobile app

  • Keep Duo Mobile notifications enabled

  • Bring your smartphone with you when accessing UNI systems from a new device or location
