Steering Committee

The Academic Positioning, Phase 2 Steering Committee is tasked with ensuring the full development and implementation recommendations of the strategic pathways identified by university leadership. Both the Phase 1 summary concepts and subsequent strategic direction from campus leadership will serve as directional guides for pathway development. The development of pathways will be achieved through structured guidance of Focused Working Groups to fully develop the details needed to implement pathways and reach the goals. The committee is expected to keep the best interest of the University and our shared future, not current structures, at the forefront of their work. Likewise, members are expected to focus on the future of the institution and do not advocate on behalf of their home departments or disciplines.

Goals of the Steering Committee are to:

1. Create a charge document for each FWG based on key objectives and EDI objectives with a timeline. The key objectives and scope will be provided by the Provost, although the Steering Committee retains the ability to add additional considerations.

2. Sustain the focus on EDI

3. Lead FWGs, effectively and efficiently

   1. Helping identify additional collaborators to build robust, representative teams.

   2. Managing rules of membership on FWGs (e.g. If someone asks to join an FWG, does the group lead/proposer decide?)

   3. Ensuring FWGs consult with all appropriate individuals, groups, and entities beyond the committee of collaborators to ensure full campus awareness and participation.

   4. Encouraging and helping FWGs reach out to external partners (e.g. employers, graduate programs) when appropriate.

   5. Helping FWGs negotiate “territory” or other structural impediments to the pathways.

   6. Ensuring FWGs remain focused on key objectives and scope and make timely progress.

4. Serve as liaisons between FWGs and the Steering Committee

   1. Provide updates to the Steering Committee on FWG progress and needs

   2. Coordinate across FWGs to support collaborative pathway development

5. Create a communication and feedback plan with campus

   1. Processes for campus input such as “amicus” briefs, town halls, and other forms of feedback.

   2. Help provide updates to the broader campus community

6. Meet and consult with shared governance groups across campus

   1. Ensure a process to move proposals through their proper consultative and/or approval channels, such as UCC, GCCC, Senate, Grad Council, faculty leadership, and Administration.

7. Compile recommendations, framed within the broader vision of the initiative, from FWGs to forward to Executive Management
